Difficile de passer ce week-end sans un petit post sur l’iPad. Disponible aux Etats-Unis depuis le 3 avril, il sera en magasin en Europe à partir de la fin du mois. Cependant, il est déjà possible de consulter les premières impressions des utilisateurs et par la même occasion d’en connaître plus sur le produit.
- Estimation de 300 000 unités vendues ce samedi 3 avril !
- Une comparaison intéressante est le nombre de personnes qui attendent l’ouverture de l’Apple Store de New-York (5th avenue) lors du lancement d’un nouveau produit : 730 personnes pour l’iPad, 540 pour l’iPhone 3GS, 350 pour l’iPhone 3G !

- Lecture des journaux/quotidiens/magazines : en question, la capacité de ces produits à proposer un format de lecture / une mise en page, qui se rapproche d’un vrai journal et/ou magazine. En effet il est possible de naviguer à travers un journal et/ou magazine par la seule lecture de ses titres voir même par la seule visualisation de ses images et graphiques. Aujourd’hui impossible sur un Kindle, qui offre une consultation en noir et blanc exclusivement séquentielle page par page. Le format page web n’est pas non plus la mise en page idéale en comparaison à une version papier. L’iPad a un avantage certain sur le Kindle avec pour exemple l’application New York Times qui combine tous les avantages d’une édition papier en matière de navigation ainsi que de nouvelles possibilités multimédias.
- Lecture de livres : en question la fatigue des yeux à regarder / lire un écran rétro-éclairé LCD/LED utilisé par l’iPad versus un écran E-Ink qui équipe le Kindle, technologie d’écran nécessitant très peu d’énergie (autonomie de plusieurs semaines pour le Kindle) et qui offre, un confort de lecture très proche du papier et de l’encre. Je pense que l’iPad gagne quand même, mais il faut tester….. ou le Kindle restera une plateforme intéressante pour la lecture intensive voir un usage professionnel ?

Il est clair que l’iPad est sans doute le produit PARFAIT pour CONSOMMER DU CONTENU (news, livre, photo, musique, vidéo, jeux, email, agenda…), il va sans doute à ce titre, remplacer l’ordinateur individuel à la maison. L’iPad est aussi un COMPLEMENT indispensable aux “Smart-phones” dont les applications ciblent un usage exclusivement mobile (localisation, cartographie…) avec certes de la consommation de contenu mais finalement assez limitée de par la taille réduite de l’écran et du clavier de ces produits. Il est finalement difficile de lire un livre, de regarder une vidéo ou de naviguer/lire le web sur un écran de “Smart-phone”. Concernant les jeux, après les mobiles et consoles, l’iPad propose certainement une nouvelle architecture matériel et logiciel pour ce marché.
La 1ère question est la capacité de l’iPad avec ses applications Keynotes, Numbers et Pages à remplacer le PC ? Avec l’arrivée des “Smart-phones” puis maintenant des “Tablets”, il est évident que le marché de l’ordinateur individuel se segmente de plus en plus. Le PC va devenir un produit dédié à la CREATION & PRODUCTION DE CONTENU (montage vidéo, retouche photo, édition, modélisation etc….) et la Tablet un produit dédié à la CONSOMMATION DE CONTENU.
La 2ème question concerne le marché du livre et de la numérisation de son contenu (voir mes articles successifs sur ce sujet). L’iPad va t’il remplacer le Kindle d’Amazon ?
Dans une note intitulée eBook ou iTablet, j’aborde les différentiations produits entre un eBook de type Amazon Kindle et une Tablet de type iPad (note écrite avant de connaître les spécifications finales de l’iPad). Les 2 points clés à anticiper sont les suivants :
L’iPad a certainement un avantage certain, avec son interface utilisateur et Apple avec son savoir faire dans le domaine des produits électroniques. A contrario, l’avantage d’Amazon est son magasin en ligne disposant de 400 000 ouvrages contre 60 000 pour l’Apple iBook store.
Une preuve de l’intelligence “business” d’Amazon, est la disponibilité de l’application Kindle pour iPad permettant aux utilisateurs d’iPad d’accéder au contenu d’Amazon. Le business n’est t-il pas dans le contenu à long terme ? Un autre moyen pour Amazon de surprendre est de descendre le prix de son Kindle aux alentours des $100 (aujourd’hui à $250) en comparaison à un iPad à $500.
L’impact de ces nouveaux produits sur l’industrie du livre et de l’information va être majeur. Il est certain que la transition vers le tout numérique (au même titre que la musique il y a 10 ans) concernant l’industrie du “publishing” est en route.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
While this subject can be very touchy for most people, my opinion is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find.
